Hopi

Many of my clients regard it as a deeply relaxing stress management treatment also as a great preventative measure as prevention being better than cure.

FAQs

What is Thermo-Auricular Therapy?

Thermo-Auricular Therapy, also known as “Hopi Ear Candling” is a deeply relaxing and stress reducing treatment. It can help with ear, nose, throat, head and sinus problems; see Below the full list of what it can help.

How does Thermo-Auricular Therapy work?

An “ear candle” which is hollow tube made of woven organic cotton; is lit and placed over the entrance to the ear canal. Heat from the candle is then drawn into the ear creating a vacuum that causes wax to rise and be expelled from the ears.

Many clients find the “Hopi” treatment a truly relaxing experience, especially around the ear, nose and throat area. In turn, the relaxation increases the effectiveness of the removal of wax from the ear.

What conditions is Thermo-Auricular Therapy good for?

Thermo-Auricular Therapy boosts the metabolism and the lymphatic system, increasing resistance to illness and is particularly good for:

•	Relief of pressure before flying or diving
•	Ear blockages due to excessive wax
•	Sinusitis and other sinus problems
•	Itching and irritations in the ears
•	Tinnitus & noises in the ear
•	Colds, flu and sore throats
•	Headaches and migraines
•	Rhinitis & hay fever
•	Catarrh and sinusitis
•	Eczema & psoriasis
•	Excessive stress
•	Labyrinthitis
•	Glue ear
•	Snoring

What are the candles made from?

The “candles” are hollow tubes made from woven organic cotton that has been impregnated with beeswax, and rolled into a tube. They also contain: honey, St John's Wort and herbs such as sage and chamomile; all of which add to a wonderful relaxing and decongesting effect.

These candles have traditionally been used by healers in many different cultures, for use in rituals and ceremonies, to cleanse and harmonise energy fields and to drive out negative energies. (From “Hopi Candles” by Jili Hamilton)

I use candles from a German company called BIØSUN®. They are made from the highest quality ingredients, are rigorously tested by an independent laboratory in Germany, where it has been shown, they are free of all chemical pesticide & fungicidal residues.

How do the candles work?

Ear candles create a chimney effect, which is a light suction action when they are lit and placed over the entrance to the ear canal, the warm air from the candle is drawn into the ear canal and this has the effect of softening and loosening wax so that it comes out more easily. Whilst this is happening, the eardrum is massaged by this action, with warm air from the candle, and so has an effect on the middle and inner ear. This is how it can help complaints of the inner ear such as labyrinthitis.

The treatment induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balancing of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It can be soothing for earache and headaches, ear noise, and stress.

What happens during a treatment?

Before I start the treatment I first of all take a case history, to find out what problems you are having and how long it has been going on, how and when it started etc., The first treatment can take a bit longer than an hour because of this.

You will need to remove only your shoes and lie on the treatment couch, to have the treatment; I treat people while they are lying on a massage couch on one side.

I first of all look in each ear with an Otoscope, which is the same instrument that a Doctor uses. From this I can add information to my notes about what condition your ear is in and how much wax there is.

I get you to lie down on one side, and I place the lit candle carefully in the ear. I then gently holding the base of the candle, there is absolutely no danger and no possibility of the client getting burnt, I am there throughout the treatment, to keep an eye on the candle. When I have finished one ear, the candle is extinguished in water, and put to one side, I then repeat the process on the other side. Each candle usually take anything from 10 to 15 minutes to burn.

After this I carry out a gentle, face massage that will enhance the effects of the candles. This works on acupressure points on the face to help promote the effects of the treatment. I also use a special herbal balm to help with blocked sinuses and colds and flu.

It is very important that both ears are treated within the same consultation, and also that you rest for at least 15 minutes after a treatment.

What is an Otoscope?

An Otoscope is the instrument the Doctor uses to look into your ears. I use this to see the general condition of the ear and eardrum and to see how much wax is present. I use this before each treatment to examine the ear.

How long does a treatment take?

The treatment sessions take between 45 minutes and one hour. We first of all discuss how your have been since your last treatment, Then the candles can take anything from 10 – 15 minutes each to burn. After that I carry out a facial massage which helps promote the effects of the candling, and also allows you to relax after the treatment.

What happens to my ears after a treatment?

Having your very first ear candling treatment starts a process which continues when you leave after the treatment. For a start you will more than likely feel more relaxed in general than when you came in for the treatment. Look out for changes in your ears, you might find that wax comes out of the ears, after the treatment, as wax might still be rising due to the treatment, you may also get popping in your ears.

Treatment may spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell, even when the nose was not blocked before the treatment.

I have been asked by clients does Ear Candling hurt?

No, not at all, in fact it is a very pleasant treatment to have!

I have regular clients who tell me how much they look forward to coming for there treatments.

While the candle is burning I will be sitting, holding the candle all the time till it has finished burning. Very often people report feeling a gentle, reassuring warmth, and you will hear a pleasantly soft crackling sound - like someone frying food in the distance.

Why do we have wax in our ears?

The body produces ear wax to cleanse and protect the ear. The ear perceives foreign objects, even something small, such as a stray bit of hair when you have your hair cut, as something to be got rid of. So, in order to do that the ear produces more wax to help push the foreign object out of the ear. The same thing applies to people who work in a dusty environment, use ear plugs or use personal stereos with small ear pieces that fit into the ear, they too could be in danger of producing too much wax.

Ear candling treatments can help to balance the production of excessive ear wax.

Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears out?

Cotton buds are bad for ears, fibres can easily come off them and cause more wax to build up. Wax will naturally migrate out of the ear. If you use cotton buds you can risk pushing wax further down the ear canal, or pressing it against the sides of the ear canal, leading to more problems.

Are there any ear conditions you will not treat?

Treatment may not be advised if:

•	There has been a recent perforation of the ear drum
•	You have grommets in place
•	Oil has been put into the ears within the last 24 hours
•	If there is inflammation or ear infection which has started within the past 24 hours
•	If you know that you have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients listed below

Ingredients in Ear Candles
•	Beeswax
•	Honey
•	Sage
•	St Johns Wort
•	Beta-carotene
•	Chamomile

Make sure that you drink plenty of water after a treatment, to wash away toxins and make sure that you get the best out come.

How much is a Thermo Auricular Treatment?

Each Thermo Auricular Treatment is £45.00, the first treatment can take a bit longer than subsequent treatments, but it is the same price.

What qualifications do you need to do Hopi Ear Candling?

A qualified practitioner will have undertaken at least one Hopi Ear Candling or Thermo-Auricular course, which is recognised by one or more of the professional therapist organisations or accredited by a certification authority. Added to that they would also need to have a Diploma in Anatomy & Physiology.

Personally, I undertook a Diploma in Anatomy & Physiology Theory, in 2002 that took a year to complete, with the Middlesex School of Complementary Medicine. I took a Hopi Ear Candling course also with the Middlesex School in 2003; this qualified me to treat clients.

Since then I have added to my skills and experience by, in 2007 doing an Advanced Thermo-Auricular Certificate, which included the use of an Otoscope. I did this training with Sue Maunsell, of Thermo-Auricular Therapy Training.

Most of the qualifications I have are with the International Therapy Examination Council and I am a member of Embody and the Complementary Therapists Association. I am also insured through the Complementary Therapists Association, by Holistic Insurance Services.
